Typescript copies of correspondence and documents relating to the Armstrong's of Georgia and especially to John Armstrong's expedition up the Missouri River in 1790. Includes a copy of a letter from John Armstrong, Port Vincent (i.e Vincennes), Indiana, to Colonel Richard C. Anderson, Louisville, Kentucky, 1787 August 8, presenting his respects to General George Rogers Clark, James Merriweather, Major William Crochan (Croghan) and others; skirmishes with Indians near mouth of Wabash River; is of opinion that some troops will be transferred to Kaskaskia, Illinois, following the return of Colonel Josiah Harmar from a projected trip there; describes site and situation; lists benefits of establishment of Vincennes. Also a description by Cochran of the origin of this letter and of the letter of October 28 or 23?, 1791 from Armstrong to Anderson. Also includes correspondence between Cochran and Dr. Thwaites from 1905 discussing John Armstrong and his expedition.

Richard Clough Anderson was born on January 12, 1750 at Goldmine, Hanover County, Virgina, to Robert Anderson, the son of a Scottish immigrant, and Elizabeth Clough. John Armstrong was a soldier, merchant, and land speculator. A soldier from 1776 to 1793, he was commandant at Forts Pitt and Hamilton, and participated in the campaigns of Harmar and St. Clair. After retiring from the army, Armstrong ran a general store near Cincinnati and speculated in land.
